Abundance Manchester
Abundance Manchester is a voluntary project that picks surplus or unwanted fruit from gardens and public trees around South Manchester and distributes it to local groups and communities.
We collect and distribute surplus vegetables from allotments, too, and have our own Abundance allotment to grow food for groups who can make good use of it. We also look after Kenworthy Community Orchard in Chorlton.
To get in touch, please email us.
>> Watch the clip here from BBC’s North West Tonight programme to find out more about what we do.
Abundance Manchester also strongly supports other groups and campaigns that promote sustainable, local and organic food. We particularly support the campaign against GM crops and the recent anti-GM protest organised by Take the Flour Back, which can be seen here in this short film.
FORTHCOMING EVENTS
We are planning to celebrate the (delayed!) arrival of Spring at the orchard with volunteer day and picnic on Sunday 5th of May, please join us!
We'll meet at the orchard at 11 to start the day's tasks - manuring the various fruit bushes, planting some new gooseberries, clearing some pruned wood out of the way, and planting some more comfrey, a great companion plant for fruit trees. We'll aim to finish about 3.30pm. During the day we'll break for a shared picnic, so bring something tasty to share!
You won't need any equipment so just bring yourself and some food, and perhaps a picnic rug. It would be great if you can let us know if you're planning to come so we can get the right amount of tools together and plan tasks in advance. Directions below.
See you there!
DIRECTIONS
The orchard is located just south of Chorlton Waterpark. If arriving from Chorlton/Barlow Moor Road, the main entrance and car park (and closest toilets) are at the end of Maitland Avenue, Chorlton, M21 7WH. Enter the waterpark and take the path left around the lake. Leave the waterpark via the iron bridge on your left over the River Mersey, then head about 150 metres up the track. The orchard is on the left through an unmarked gap in the hedge.
The orchard is also accessible on foot through Kenworthy Woods from Willenhall Rd in Wythenshawe. Follow Willenhall Rd as it passes under the M60 then take the lane straight ahead (closed to vehicles with a barrier) that leads into Chorlton Waterpark. About 150 metres before you get to the bridge over the Mersey, there is an unmarked gap in the hedge on your right, the orchard is in here.
